What we collect, and what we do with it

Last updated September 26, 2026

County Voice is run by neighbors in Northumberland County, Virginia. It isn’t the government, and it isn’t a propane company. We collect only what you type into our forms, and only to do the thing you signed up for.

What we collect

  • The propane group: your name, mobile number and ZIP code, whether you own your tank, roughly how much propane you use, who fills it now, and what you’d want from a group price or could help with.
  • The Opportunity Zone calls: your name, phone, address, town and reason, and for each call you log, who you called, how it went and any notes.
  • “Tell us who you know”: your name, phone, ZIP or town, who you know, what you could help with, and any note you leave.
  • Following a county decision: your mobile number and which decision you follow.

We don’t use advertising or tracking. We count visits to each page, without cookies and without anything that says who you are. So you can come back and change what you entered, your browser keeps a private key to your entry, and for the calls your own details, on your device only.

Your browser also remembers which county decisions you follow and which weekly recaps you’ve seen, on your device only, so the site can tell you what’s new. When you follow a decision, we add one to that decision’s count of followers, without anything that says who you are.

When you ask a question with Explain, we save the question, the words you selected and the page, so the next person asking gets the same answer and we can see what people want explained. We don’t save who asked. To keep the number of questions reasonable, we count questions per visitor for the day under a scrambled code that can’t be linked to your questions or your address, and we delete it the next day.

Finding your supervisor by ZIP code happens on your phone; nothing is sent. If you type a street address instead, we send it once to the U.S. Census Bureau’s address finder to locate it on the district map, and we don’t save it. Your browser remembers the district number it found, on your device only, so you don’t have to look it up again.

County Voice assemblies are held on Consentist, a separate service, where people join from a code and say what concerns them without giving a name or making an account. What’s shown here from those assemblies is the list and how much weight each thing carries, never who said it; we don’t receive that. On pages that show the list as it changes, your browser asks Consentist for it directly, without cookies.

Meeting videos are the county’s, on YouTube. Nothing loads from YouTube until you press play; then YouTube’s player loads from its privacy-enhanced address, and YouTube sees that visit under its own privacy policy.

How we use it

  • To text or call you about the effort you joined: the propane price when it comes in, or news on a county decision you follow.
  • To count how many households are in, and roughly how many gallons, so dealers can make an offer. What’s public is counts, never who.
  • Notes from calls appear on the site only if you chose to share them, and only after a person has read them.

What we never do

  • We never sell your information.
  • We never share your mobile number or your consent to receive texts with third parties or affiliates for marketing or promotional purposes.
  • We never publish your name, number or address, or show them on this site.

One exception, and only if you ask for it: if you tap “I’m in” on a propane price, we pass your name and number to that one dealer so they can set up your delivery. Nobody else.

Who helps us run it

Your information is stored with our database provider (Supabase) and texts are sent through Twilio. They handle it only to provide those services to us.
