Wetlands Board

Decides permits for work along the tidal shoreline, such as a bulkhead or riprap. These don’t go to the Board of Supervisors.

“The Wetlands Board was established to hear requests from any citizen who desires to use or develop any wetland (vegetated or non-vegetated) for the purpose of protection, access to water, recreation, business, occupation or conservation.”

“The Wetlands Board meets the second Tuesday of each month at 5 pm in the Sheriff's Office conference room located at 195 Judicial Place, Heathsville, VA 22473.”

In state law

State law says a county that adopts the state’s wetlands ordinance “shall create a wetlands board, consisting of five or seven residents of that jurisdiction appointed by the local governing body”. Under that ordinance, anyone who wants “to use or develop any wetland” must “first file an application for a permit”; the board “shall hold a public hearing on the application”. The law adds: “Any person may testify at the public hearing.” The board then “shall make its determination within 30 days of the hearing”.
